Mike Murphy grew up on a working cattle ranch outside of the small South Texas town of Refugio. At the age of twenty, he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and for the next five years, participated in some of the largest rodeos in the country as a tie-down calf roper. From there, he worked his way into the oil business, reworking and drilling new wells on abandoned fields that still had plenty of life and oil left far below the surface. After traveling to New York and taking several courses in creative writing under the legendary Robert McKee, Mike sold his interests in the oil business and moved to Austin, Texas, to follow his dream of writing. His screenplays have been featured in national magazines such as Script, Creative Screenwriting and Fade In. A reality television show he wrote, titled Gusher, was sold on the spot to Chameleon Entertainment at the Los Angeles Screenwriting Expo as announced in Variety. His latest screenplay named Cartel Hell was recently announced a winner in this year's prestigious Page International Screenwriting Contest. Javelina, a campy horror film he penned, was shot on location in Rocksprings, Texas, by Flatiron Pictures. Lizzie Fox, his debut novel, is adapted from one of his screenplays that was previously optioned and developed in Hollywood. Mike resides and writes in Austin, where the music and BBQ are authentic, and the beer is ice cold.
