I live in Southampton and balance my time between taking funeral services and writing and selling art. My three children have grown and fled the nest, that is fled the nest. In the process of leavetaking, and as the clouds of dust settled, I discovered that I had been left with a noisy cockatiel called Monty.
My career, in a single sentence, includes schooling in Cumbria, university in Canterbury, teaching in inner city Leeds and life as an Anglican priest for 20 years.
I have a journeying spirit, especially in my youth when I hitchhiked thousands of miles around the United States and South Africa, France and home; sometimes, in the States, I rode the trains like a hobo. Then I fell in love and life became serious and I took a job with the title, 'Chaplain on the High Seas' – the job was ok but the title humoured my wild romantic side. Between hitchhiking and getting hitched, I joined an urban farm in Leeds and learned how to cook pig swill over an open fire early in the morning as the winter sun struggled to melt the frost. All of this has given me a great treasure trove of stories, and I have valued the people and conversations along the way. My life has not turned out the way I imagined in my early 20’s, but as I often say to myself, it has been a life of great wealth with no money, and great highs with no status, but it is MY life.
