I am a crime fiction writer born and raised in England, made in America. I am fascinated by the untold stories, histories and details I find in the world and in finding connections between the disconnected. I was catalysed into writing by my passion for graffiti art and music in the 1990s – art and sonics as knowledge to uplift the unheard and neglected. I love comedy, listening to people’s testimonies, stories, anecdotes, observing nature, getting lost. I started as a newspaper journalist and those were the techniques I was grounded in. I self-published and edited my own magazine in my early twenties, The Real State. This became international within six months and led to me being hired by Death Row Records between 1994-1996. Self-publishing was the only way I had of developing my skills. Finally, I threw in my savings and enrolled on UEA's Crime Fiction MA which was well worth the time, money and effort; I just wished I'd done that sooner! Being published is completely different to publishing yourself.
