RITA KEMPLEY, writer, journalist and editor, spent nearly 25 years in the dark as a film critic for The Washington Post. When she returned to the light, she decided to tell her own stories instead of reflecting upon those created by other artists. "The Vessel," a futuristic thriller about climate change, life extension and religious fanaticism, is her first novel. Despite the sober subject matter, this apocalyptic yarn delivers the laughs. Lots of them. As fans of her hundreds of movie reviews know, Rita's criticism was often more entertaining than the movies she wrote about. And in her humble opinion, there is no better compliment than being told, "You made me laugh out loud." Yea! Rita, who also co-authored five screenplays including the award-winning "Gypsy Moon," is now at work on her second novel when Beau the cat allows her to use the keyboard. She, Beau and her husband, Ed Schneider, reside in Alexandria, Virginia, which is already feeling the effects of the changing climate. Last year, the Washington, D.C., area had more rain fall than Seattle.
