Grew up in San Bernardino, CA and graduated from the U.C. Riverside, completed an M.A. and Ph. D. in American history and then an M.A. in Communication Studies at the University of Iowa. First book: "Children of Fantasy: The First Rebels of Greenwich Village," published by John Wiley and Sons.
I stumbled onto the 99th Division and for reasons only my unconscious knows began researching this green infantry division formed to deal with the WWII emergency, which became, "Once Upon A Time In War," an ironic title. The book has touched the lives of veterans, children and grandchildren. On Saturday June 20, Harold Hill, former company commander of G/395, stopped by with his two daughters on their way back to Washington. Harold thanked me profusely for writing the book. It suddenly dawned on me why he and others feel so grateful. The book provides a small measure of immortality and offers to the public some sense of what 99er GIs endured in training and in combat. Those sacrifices and accomplishments have finally been acknowledged and their love ones can learn and appreciate what their dads, spouses, grandfathers, and siblings went through. I finally realized what the book means. It is a powerful narrative that will bring tears to your eyes. I cannot read it without being emotionally affected.
