Chief Rodney Muterspaw rose through the ranks of Patrol Officer, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Deputy Chief before being selected as the Chief of Police in January 2015. His career spanned three decades with stints as a Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, Narcotics Detective, Bike Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Community Policing Supervisor, and Investigations and Narcotics Command. Muterspaw, who was born and raised in the Middletown area, brought in a mindset that Community Policing was not an assignment, rather a philosophy of policing. This created a more enjoyable working atmosphere while still getting the job done effectively. Change, Community, and transparency were the departments calling cards under his command. Chief Muterspaw was the recipient of several City Manager Pro Awards, the Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Award for his work in the Community, the City Manager Middletown Way Award for his above and beyond performance in the city, the History Maker Award for his tenure in Middletown and the NAACP Award for Leadership as the Middletown Police Chief. He has also been recognized for Outstanding Attainment by the Ohio Senate as well as a guest of the United States Congress to the Presidential State of the Union. He has appeared on many television and media outlets to promote community-police relations The Chief remains extremely active in the community through his real estate career, community work, and speaking engagements. Muterspaw is a graduate of Middletown Christian High, the Police Executive Leadership College, and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville. He is married with three children and two grandchildren.
