*** Ron Smith is a fifth generation Kansan, an attorney, a grandfather several times over, a Vietnam veteran, and an avid civil war historian. Territorial Kansas history and the era right after the civil war are his passions. A history major at Kansas Wesleyan ('73), he spent 20 years lobbying for various interests in the Kansas legislature.
*** Thomas Ewing Jr. is a larger than life figure in the late 1800s whose four-man law firm in Leavenworth, Kansas before the civil war featured some of the territory's major iconoclasts, and four men destined each to become generals in the Union army. This work represents fifteen years of research into a timeless subject.
*** Ron also writes novels under the pen name of Dean Halliday Smith. His newest novel, THE WASTAGE, has been released in early February 2016. Look for it on Amazon and wherever good books are sold.
*** Ron practices law in Larned, Kansas, and lives in the country not far from Ft. Larned, one of the best preserved frontier cavalry forts in the National Park Service. From this fort in 1867 and 1868, and the nearby Cheyenne village, Custer began his military usage of the 7th Cavalry and the Indian Wars began, which eight years later, resulted with Custer's command at the Little Big Horn. Ron's practice is primarily municipal law and estate planning, and his law office physically sits in the ruts of the old Santa Fe Trail.
*** He is married to Kahrmellesarah, and spends evenings and weekends being a referee to the territorial needs of three Great Pyrenees and Boston Terriers.
