I became interested in writing in 2006. I was 54 years of age. A local North Carolina newspaper held their annual Christmas Story contest. There were three age groups: 12 years and under, 13 to 17, and adult. A $50 prize was offered for each age group. To be honest, my only motivation was the money. After a week or so, the winners were announced in the Life and Arts section of the newspaper. They received over 200 entries and every name was listed. Although I was not among the winners, seeing my name in print had a profound affect upon me. It led me to take a creative writing correspondence course at the University of North Carolina. In 2012, I began entering other creative writing contests. That year, I received Honorable Mention. I won 5th place two years in a row after that. I won first place the following year. During those years, I wrote The Adventures of Swift and Pete. I also managed to write a full young-adult novel. I guess you could say that I sort of stumbled into writing. It was like falling into a vat of melted chocolate by accident. Happy reading, my friends.
