Rowena Surguy Womack was born during the Great Depression with tuberculosis and re-contracted the disease at the age of twelve. From the age of twelve she spent three years in isolation at the Irene Byron sanatorium in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and was one of the youngest patients ever treated for pulmonary tuberculosis with pneumathorax treatment. Despite these early health setbacks, Rowena maintained a thankful spirit and determination to succeed, and despite missing almost all of high school she excelled as a student and graduated in the top ten per cent of her high school class, excelling in speech, debate, writing, music and mathematics. She considered becoming a lawyer, but chose motherhood instead. She had an inspiring example, as her mother graduated as the Valedictorian of her High School Class at the high school in Warsaw, Indiana. With outstanding academic achievements Rowena considered attending Purdue University to become a lawyer, but after three years in a TB sanitorium she decided she'd had enough of institutions for a while, and got married instead to Don Edward Womack. Rowena and Don were blessed with six children, five sons and a daughter over the years. About fifteen years later, Rowena became a single mother for fourteen years, which was certainly challenging but also meet with a glad heart. Today Rowena she counts many grandchildren and great grandchildren in the family fold. She became a cancer survivor at the age of sixty, and more than two decades later she remains the thankful spirit, guided by her strong Christian faith. Rowena finds inspirations for her writings in the modest and the profound along the road of life. She always begins her stories as poems, and they evolve from there into stories for children, and sometimes the stories have a mind of their own. She is the author of several children's illustrated books, including POPCORN, YELLOWSTONE MOOSE (recently released in French and Japanese language versions), GOOFUSUS ETC, and TOMMY TWO SHOES, as well as a collection of romantic poems for older women she wrote in her 80s for publication in early 2021. Rowena remains busy, currently serving as a board member for the 501 (c) (3) non-profit promoting literacy named THE TOMMY TWO SHOES LITERACY PROJECT FOR CHILDREN INC. This non-profit was named after one of Rowena's favorite works, written about her grandson and his struggle to put the correct shoe on the correct foot, entitled Tommy Two Shoes. That grandson named Tommy who inspired the TOMMY TWO SHOES story is now a 6'4," 29 year old pharmacist today. Tommy. Rowena's latest release is the sequel to her best selling title, POPCORN, entitled, what else, POPCORN II: The Sequel To The Ever-Popular Book, Popcorn! This highly anticipated new release is scheduled to find its way to Amazon in July 2020.
