Shauna Renee Anderson is a restaurateur, author, historian and economic statistician. Born in 1954 in Washington, D.C. to professional singer, Geneva Anderson and Walter “Chris” Holmes, a saxophone player. After attending McKinley Technical High School and the University of the District of Columbia, Shauna began her professional career as a statistician for the Internal Revenue Service, travelling to various states and teaching IRS personnel data processing and error resolution procedures. Shauna moved on to create a successful tax accounting business in Hyattsville MD. While doing tax accounting, Shauna realized that she had an interest in everything chitlins. Chitterlings, also known as chitlins, are the prepared intestines of a hog. Shauna was always amazed at how the power and conversation of chitlins bring people together and how it makes them extraordinarily happy. Shauna created The Chitlin Market in Hyattsville, MD where people could come together and eat chitlins and share their chitlin stories. In 2003, the Smithsonian Institution’s Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture accepted the papers of Shauna Anderson and her business, The Chitlin Market, as part of its emerging collection of materials about African American celebrations, foods and foodways. Shauna lives in Washington, DC and is the mother of one daughter.
