I have had a lifelong interest in folk tales. These are among the oldest stories that we tell ourselves, either round a fireplace or in the tavern. In Sussex, England, where I grew up, there were numerous stories featuring pixies, the devil and dragons who lived at the bottom of cold dark ponds. It was said that the devil had a particular fear of Sussex as cooks in that county could make a pie out of anything. I moved to Somerset with my family and discovered yet more dragons lurking in the Severn and in the hills behind Glastonbury. Today we live in the Loire in France close by a secret valley where there is said to be a fountain of youth, discovered by an ancient King. There are ghosts and dragons too, so we are always on our guard…just in case.
