A Boston native, STEPHEN M. MURPHY graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts and the University of San Francisco School of Law. After graduating from law school in 1981, he worked for a year as a law clerk to the justices of the New Hampshire Superior Court. While in New Hampshire he worked on a murder trial that inspired his first novel, ALIBI, which he started writing in 1988. ALIBI took ten years to complete and nearly as long to get published. The book was published in May of 2005 by Jove, a division of Penguin Putnam. In addition to writing, Murphy is also an avid reader of legal fiction. He has interviewed dozens of lawyer authors and published reviews of legal fiction in newspapers and magazines. His book "THEIR WORD IS LAW: Bestselling Lawyer-Novelists Talk About Their Craft" was published by Berkley in 2002. WHAT IF HOLDEN CAULFIELD WENT TO LAW SCHOOL?
