Stephen W. Saint is the author of numerous short stories, most of which received a grade of B- or C+. Steve is easily distracted and finds it difficult to apply himself. When he was seven, a teacher threatened to put a bomb under his chair to help him focus. The same teacher told him he needed to pull up his socks. Surprisingly, the teacher got angry when Steve reached down and pulled them up (teachers can be unpredictable, but most are pretty great). It took nearly six years for Steve to write 'Harvey Ranger: The Whale that Wasn’t'. Given his short attention span, you might be surprised that he wrote the book at all. However, when you understand that the book itself was a distraction from what he was actually supposed to be doing (real work that pays the bills), it makes more sense.
Although he was born and now lives in Canada, Steve’s childhood was spent in Weymouth and Farnham, England. He attended high school in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, before moving west to the University of Waterloo, where he majored in Applied Physics. Applied Physics didn’t agree with him (he didn’t apply himself), so he completed his degree with a B.Sc in General Science instead.
Steve has made a living working as a newspaper deliverer, ice cream purveyor, cook, lifeguard, remote sensing analyst, skid test technician, forklift driver, photographer, wholesale photo finishing salesman, delivery driver, research assistant, landlord, and information technology consultant. If you buy this book, he will be able to add “author” to the list.
Steve was inspired to start the Harvey Ranger books from a series of bedtime stories he created for his daughters. Picture books have the fewest number of words, so he decided to start there. The initial picture book transcript was turned down by all the publishers he sent it to (a grand total of one), so instead he decided to write a short story and then a less short story and finally a longer story.
When he isn’t working or writing, Steve spends his time walking, cycling, boating, coaching soccer, geocaching, ping ponging, parenting, and engaging in church activities. At the time of writing, his favourite food is Swiss cheese and his favourite word is pamplemousse.
