Susan L. Crawford began writing children's books shortly after graduating from the University of Kansas in 1996 with a degree in Graphic Design. Her father gave her the first two lines of "Annabelle Anteater", accompanied by the words "These have been drifting around in my noggin' since you were tiny. See if you can do anything with them."
She did.
After years of submitting her stories to publishing houses to hear "The writing is good, but..." Susan decided to publish her stories on her own. It's a slow process: the writing is the easy part. The illustrations take a bit longer, but it's all a labor of love.
Susan's stories usually have a theme, though it's not the intent when the writing begins. It's simply the way it happens, as it usually is with things of the heart: they come out the way they are supposed to. The themes of kindness, of family and of love are common in her writing, though they're more of a side note to the stories themselves. It mirrors the way she tries to live her life: to make good choices, to work hard, and to add a bit of brightness to the dark corners we all find ourselves facing from time to time.
Susan is currently working on illustrations for "Barton, the Very Hairy Buffalo" with several more stories just waiting their turn. They are patient. They've been sitting quietly by, because they all know soon enough they will have their moment to shine.
