"I'm Jim Turpin, Sergeant, Texas Rangers. This writ is for you to cease and desist." He held the paper in front of Pruitt's face.
"No need for further unpleasantries. We're doin' official State business now. You talk to me and only to me. Sabe?" Turpin rubbed the underside of his mustache with a broad knuckle.
"I heard of a Ranger once who told some chucklehead from back East that was about to break the law,'I don't like anything I hear or see, I'm gonna crack you hard on the skull with the barrel of my forty-five. Then I'm gonna arrest you for interfering with lawful service. Ain't no judge in this county gonna doubt my word.' That story has always stuck with me, I don't know why." Turpin smiled. "Do you?"
The only sound besides the ceaseless desert wind was Pruitt's stifled breathing as he choked down his impulse to talk back. The Ranger slapped the paper against the younger man's chest with the flat of his hand. "Welcome to Texas, Mr. Pruitt."
