DR. THOMAS E. SAWYER, Ph.D, J.D.
MILITARY SERVICE:
United States Air Force; four years (Korean War).
U.S. GOVERNMENT SERVICE:
Twenty-three years of service as an “Operations Officer,” “Clandestine Service,” Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). While on active duty, served two tours of duty in Tehran, Iran; two tours in Asia; and two tours in Western Europe/Deputy Chief of Station at one post. (As a pilot, while in Iran, frequently flew with pilots of the Iranian Air Force.) While assigned to CIA Headquarters, traveled extensively overseas conducting operational matters. Taught at the university level; also was an Associate Research Professor—CPIA/SIS, American University. Served on academic panels discussing aspects of the Soviet political system and was associated with two “Consulting Firms” (wrote “project proposals” for U.S. Government contracts). After receiving my law degree, practiced law for fifteen years. Also served as president of a local “Bar Association” and, subsequently, as president of a regional “Bar Association.” Also established and managed a commercial orchard; as well as managing timber property.
EDUCATION:
Study of the Russian Language, The U.S. Air Force Russian Language Program, Syracuse University; B.A., Slavic Languages & Literature, University of California at Berkeley; M.A., Ph.D. (“With Distinction”), Political Science, Georgetown University; and J.D., Washington College of Law, American University.
PUBLICATIONS:
For Good of Country: The Plot to Kill an American President (Living History Publishing House). The Jewish Minority in the Soviet Union (Westview Press, Boulder, Col.; Wm. Dawson & Sons, Inc., Great Britain, 1979) which not only received international distribution, but also was recognized as an important reference source on the Soviet Jewish Issue. Moreover, after its publication the author received requests from individual professors at leading U.S., Canadian, and British universities seeking permission to use the book’s data and other information in the classroom. Years later, copies of the book were still being sold by Amazon and “Book Stores” worldwide. Wrote book reviews, e.g., Thomas E. Sawyer, Review of “The Jews in the Soviet Union Since 1917,” by Nora Levin in the Russian Review, Ohio State University, January 1993, pp. 117-18. Wrote articles for “Radio Liberty.” Awarded a research grant from the “National Endowment for the Humanities” for research on the Soviet political system.
Now retired, the author and his wife, Ellen, currently reside somewhere in the Southwestern region of the United States.
