Alongside my interest in the natural world I have spent the last few years exploring the Faroe Islands which were the subject of 'The Land of Maybe: A Faroe Islands Year'. This led to my new book 'Sigmundur and the Golden Ring' which aims to bring new readers to the exciting Viking saga which is part oral history and part legend. It's amazing to me that so many of the places described in the story are instantly recognisable by anyone who visits the islands today. The story of Sigmundur and his cousin Thorir is a classical 'coming of age' myth, where young people confront their nemesis and have to survive against seemingly impossible obstacles before returning home to claim their birthright.
