I think this is where I’m supposed to tell you how relatable and generally fabulous I am; “Tom embraces Buddhist philosophy, enjoys walks in the country with his wife, likes to read about Eastern cultures, works tirelessly on behalf of those he sees as less fortunate than himself, and loves animals.” The truth about me is that I am as fallible, flawed, and perfectly imperfect as the next person. I drive my wife Debbie nuts when I point and shout at the telly without warning.
I was originally driven to write out of necessity as therapy for depression; I've not looked back since! My first book, Lions, Liars, Donkeys and Penguins - The Killing of Alison (2020), is the critically acclaimed true story of the events surrounding the suicide of my sister who took her life after being sexually exploited by a nurse in an NHS mental health hospital. I spent decades seeking justice for Alison, but in March 2023 at the High Court in London, I failed in my quest to achieve it. I've come to realise the journey itself was my real victory. I've known the Black Dog well and as I get older I find myself increasingly allergic to fuckwittery, especially when undertaken with public money.
I'm an escapee from radical religion, a former homeless teenage punk who was expelled from school, and a public sector manager who lost my job after whistleblowing. What my experiences have taught me is far more valuable than my master’s degrees and as well as a budding author I'm a business consultant and trainer using my unique mix of learned, lived, and professional knowledge to help health and care organisations provide safe services. I’m a regular speaker at the annual Patient Safety Congress and in the wake of the Lucy Letby case I was invited to comment on NHS culture for Newsnight and LBC. I've sat on numerous steering groups contributing to nationally significant topics including Open Government, the Justice System, and NHS leadership. I believe improvement begins with understanding and our ignorance is the greatest enemy we face.
I love good music, especially when heard at Glastonbury. The Clash, Foo Fighters, and the Manic Street Preachers are among the many bands that float my boat. If I could invite any guests for a meal and the craic, at the time of writing this they would be, William Blake, Aldous Huxley, Margaret Mead, Joe Strummer, and my wife Debbie. She is my rock.
