My life has been defined by the fact that I have eight children. Chess, video games, juggling, taekwondo, scouts, clarinet, dance, reading, writing--these are all things I do because of my children. Sometimes I yearn for all the things I would do if I didn't have so many children. Then I realize I wouldn't be doing much at all--at least nothing very important.
Probably the most enjoyable thing I've done with my children is read to them. This isn't something done only when they were young, but well into their teenage years. We've felt our minds connect as I've read books such as "Lord of the Rings", the "Abhorsen" Series, "Harry Potter", and "Saffy's Angel" out loud. I owe some of my most memorable family moments to the authors.
To take a blank page and on it create a living being such as Bilbo Baggins is a God-like act. It is a power I envy. It is a power I exercise. I particularly enjoy juvenile and young adult literature. Perhaps this literature is why I have so many children. Perhaps my children are what keeps me connected to this literature. In any case, my life is filled with children and stories. It is a good life.
