A retired educator (music, teacher-librarian, and reading teacher); Vanessa Fortenberry, an award winning author, pens inspirational stories (fiction and non fiction) for children and adults. Inspired by her grandson's curiosity about wanting to see God, Vanessa wrote the children's verse story, "Mama, I Want to See God." This story echoes the ways in which young readers inquisitively want to know if they can see God and if they look like Him. This book was a winner in the 2017 Bookvanna Book Awards and a finalist in the 2016 Best Book Awards.
"Daddy, I Want to Know God," the second book in the series, Families Growing in Faith, is also a rhyming verse-story, about a child’s probing questions to his dad, showing a burning desire to connect with God personally, and to learn more about Him. Vanessa is a winner in the 2021 Firebird Book Awards in the categories: Book Cover Design- Children Picture Books, Children’s-Inspirational/Motivational, and the Children’s Religion; a finalist in the 2021 Book Excellence Award; a winner in the 2019 Christian Indie Award., and the 2018 in the American Fiction Awards.
"Grandma, Granddad, We Want to Praise God," the third book in the series, Families Growing in Faith, once again follows inquisitive children who learn from their loving grandparents that praising God brings joy.
Vanessa enjoys writing her quarterly e-newsletter, "Connecting Readers to the Word," in which her readers get a glimpse of her "Speak Life" words of inspiration, "Quick Picks" recommendations of books for children and adults, and "Vanessa's Bulletin Board" of announcements. Vanessa's "Connecting Readers and Writers to the Word" blog explores literacy topics for readers, writers, children, and adults.
Vanessa also contributed to the book, "Relief Notes: Encouraging Letters for Tough Times" written by The Christian Authors Guild. This book offer messages of encouragement and inspiration during times of hardships.
Vanessa loves singing for the Lord and baking homemade goods for her loved ones. She is available for speaking engagements, writing workshops, interviews, and appearances.
