Winston J. Duncan received a bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Texas and later earned a masters degree in business from the University of California at Berkeley. He teaches college-level calculus classes to both engineering and business students in his hometown of Houston, Texas
He has received of numerous grants and awards, including a Sloan Research Fellowship. He has 208 citations by 97 authors in MathSciNet. He also gave an invited address at the American Mathematical Society Meeting at Tulane University in 2012.
But despite being a world-class mathematician, he was one of the few students in his engineering classes who could write equally well.
“I did well on term papers for a math major,” Duncan says, “I could have made a fortune as an undergrad writing other students’ papers for them - the other math majors just detested writing.”
Mr. Duncan began writing e-books as a way for his students to refer back to the material they learned in his classes. When his works were sought after by students who had never taken his classes, he decided to have them published on a wider scale.
“I had students who made it through my class, but I knew they would want to refer back to the material without pulling out old notebooks,” Duncan recalls, “So I started writing it all down in e-book format for students to have after the class was finished. After a few months, I would get students coming to my office asking a buy the e-book on my class material, that weren’t even taking my class. When I asked why they wanted the book, they said they understood the material the first time through in the e-book format. I thought maybe these would help other students on other campuses. The Jeff Bezos announced that we could now publish our own books electronically, and I decided to give it a try.”
Mr. Duncan’s e-books in mathematics, logic, and finance are now bestsellers on all of the major e-book outlets. His biggest selling works so far are Options Trading: Invest Wisely and Profit From Day One, A Mind For Numbers at Any Age, and Earn Money From Home.
“The best part is receiving e-mail from readers, thanking me for writing the material in a way they now understand,” Duncan says, “I realize that not everyone reads math textbooks for fun - that’s okay!”
He enjoys running, hiking, and traveling in his spare time.
