Ever since I was a kid, I loved telling stories. My imagination led me to vast worlds with amazing characters and action. There had to be some way I could share them with the world. I was told, “why not write a novel?” Sounded intriguing but how could I even hope to do something like that? I can’t write prose like all those big-time authors, nor could I figure out how to put all the complex story tropes into words. It seemed like an impossible task that I could never pull off.
So I went to community college, hoping to learn the craft. I was excited on my first day of writing class, feeling like this was my first step to accomplishing my goals. It didn’t take even ten minutes for me to know I made the wrong choice. I felt like my imagination was being put into a box; the walls ready to squeeze in on me. I wasn’t going to learn about writing there. What mattered more was passing the class, trying to structure it like math or science.
A few days went by and I happened to be scrolling on YouTube when I came across two writing channels that ignited a newfound passion. I was learning so much with every video that made me believe that I could do this too. I could also write stories that matter.
I knew doing a novel wouldn’t be ideal to start, so I started writing short stories. Those short stories eventually turned into my first published book two years later. A lot of hard work and perseverance, but I did it. I became an author.
Though I’m still learning as I write more books, this has been an incredible moment. I thought I couldn’t write a single word, and now with my first ever novel, I’ve written over one hundred thousand.
