昭和初期に活躍したが惜しくも早世した小説家、中島敦の短編小説。遺稿として1943（昭和18）年の「文學界」に発表され、深い交友があった深田久弥が、最も無難な題名を選び命名した。前漢の武帝の時代、侵略をくりかえす匈奴を討つために北辺の地へ向かった李陵であったが、やむなく捕虜となってしまう。そしてその李陵を弁護した歴史家・司馬遷は、宮刑に処されてしまう。時代の波に翻弄される男たちの姿を描き、“人間の真の美しさ”を問う作品。
