たとえば、第二次世界大戦の前哨戦ともいわれるスペイン内戦だが、その実質は共産主義政府（スペイン共和国人民戦線政府）に対する反共産主義勢力（フランコ反乱軍）の戦いであった。しかし、一般書ではスペイン政府を「共和国」と記述するばかりで、当時の共和国が実質「スペイン社会主義共和国」であったことを書かない。
また、第二次世界大戦期およびそれに続く冷戦期において、米民主党政権（ルーズベルト政権およびトルーマン政権）内に多くのソビエトスパイが潜入していたことを示すヴェノナ文書が発表されており、ソビエト崩壊後の1990年代から多くのソビエト側資料も出ている。これにより、一般歴史書の記述の修正が必要だが、リベラル歴史家による積極的な解釈の見直しの動きはない。
