About this listen
In 1935, with a doctorate in art history and no prospect of a job, twenty-six-year-old Ernst Gombrich was invited to attempt a history of the world for younger readers. Amazingly, he completed the task in an intense six weeks, and Eine kurze Weltgeschichte für junge Leser was published in Vienna to immediate success. It is now an international bestseller and available in almost thirty languages across the world.
In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the Stone Age to the atomic bomb. In between emerges a colorful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of science. This is a text dominated not by dates and facts but by the sweep of mankind’s experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity’s achievements and an acute witness to its frailties. The product of a generous and humane sensibility, this timeless account makes intelligible the full span of human history.

European History
A great book on European history. Heart breaking. Nicely built up. World is exponentially improving because of human effort. Hope historians write about positive side also so that the readers understand that future will always be better than past as has been happening for ages. We all are part of it and should contribute whatever we can.

An important read
An excellent book on Europe.. I think it is important for us in India too as we do not get much insights on this in our schools.

A beautiful narration
The simple language, the clarity of thought and the gentle flow of narrative- much like a tinkling stream - makes this little history capitivating and beautiful.

History made interesting.
This delightful book narrates the history of the world from antiquity to the 1980s. It is Eurocentric with some chapters devoted to China and India. One of the major themes of the book is how much of our history is linked to greed and violence. Repeating in cycles through the ages.
There are little editorial nuggets in every chapter that are a delight. The author also does not pull any punches when talking about the underlying reasons for historic events.
This is as much a book of world history as it is a reminder that the human species is possibly the most violent on the planet.

Excellent but euro centric
Beautifully detailed but the world was mainly European focused. Enjoyed the story telling which left me wanting to listen for more.

precise content, excellent narration, brilliant pace. the author's method of switching, from one important event to another, has an artistic flavor to it
