About this listen

Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award

After moving uptown to the Bronx, the charming All-of-a-Kind Family has a new home, new neighbors and a lot going on! Ella misses Jules, who is fighting in World War I, Henny spills tea on a dress she borrowed without asking, Sarah works to win a prize at school, Charlotte takes the elevated train without paying her fare, Gertie make a pancake, and little Charlie is terrified when he meets Santa Claus. In true family spirit, they all come together to keep the house running smoothly when Mama goes into the hospital to have her appendix removed!

Born in 1904 on New York's Lower East Side, Sydney Taylor wrote numerous immensely-popular books for children, including the All-of-a-Kind Family series: All-of-a-Kind Family, All-of-a-Kind Family Downtown, More of All-of-a-Kind Family, All-of-a-Kind Family Uptown and Ella of All-of-a-Kind Family. Each year, the Sydney Taylor Book Award is given by the Jewish Association of Libraries to a book for young people that authentically portrays the Jewish experience.

Suzanne Toren's enticing storytelling style has served her well in her 30-year career of recording audiobooks. Honored with multiple Earphones Awards, in 2019 Toren received the AudioFile magazine lifetime achievement award, the "Golden Voice." In addition, Toren has appeared on and off Broadway and in regional theaters throughout the country and on television.

Critic Reviews

"With Suzanne Toren as narrator, listeners to Taylor's beloved classic are in for a treat. Detailed episodes of the four sisters and their endearing young brother, Charlie, are set within the holidays of the Jewish year. Just a few of the WWI period episodes include discovering the joys of learning and the pleasures of reading, celebrating Sukkot, and collecting prune pits to burn for charcoal in the war effort. Toren delivers every personality and accent with aplomb. Papa's Eastern European authority and devotion to his faith, Mrs. Healy's lilting Irish brogue, young Ella's and Grace's love-filled yearnings, Gertie's mischievous remarks, and Charlie's childlike observations are all rich in personality. Toren's precise and clear diction is a delight." (AudioFile)
