Howard Fast's Immigrants saga about the Lavette Family comes to its rich and moving conclusion in An Independent Woman, the sixth book in the series. Barbara Lavette is the centerpiece of the novel, in all her stalwart, socially liberal, charismatic glory. One of the benefits of a series is that the author comes to know his subjects intimately, so they almost seem to act of their own accord. Dialogue rolls easily from the mouths of these family members, dramatized expressively by actress Sandra Burr. Burr has performed several hundred audiobooks in her career, and her experience shows. Which character is speaking can be deduced purely from vocal style in Burr's gifted interpretation.
