About this listen

Ashoka the Great chronicles the life of Emperor Ashoka. It is fictional biography and more accurately can be called historical fiction. The original Dutch version was a trilogy, published separately in three volumes. The trilogy was written between1937 and 1947 by a Dutch scholar, Wytze Keuning, in Groningen in the Netherlands. These three volumes - Ashoka: The Wild Prince, Book I; Ashoka: The Wise Ruler, Book II; and Ashoka: The World's Great Teacher, Book III - are now brought together and presented in this single volume, Ashoka the Great.

The book is an exhilarating, spiritually edifying and deeply moving story of one of India's greatest emperors. It re-creates the life and times of the Mauryas with an authenticity that is remarkable. The book presents a plausible vision of the past balanced by captivating story. It is said that a great book, if it is to endure, cannot do without profound ideas. Keuning perfectly fuses facts and thoughts, Mauryan customs and mores, life and reflection on the meaning of life as seen through the vision of Ashoka sgurus and the history of personal influences upon Ashoka that marked his rule and legacy. This and more makes it a rare and distinguished book.

Very good, could be less in length though.

Could be 1/3rd less without losing out on story by avoiding side stories and discriptions.

A must listen!

Sagar Arya's narration is outstanding. Wytze Keuning's knowledge about history, ancient India, Hinduism, Buddhism is also good. His story telling style make this book even more interesting. He has ability to make a book as long as this interesting. J. E. Steur has also done a great job in his translation. A special thanks to him as he combine the dutch books of Wytze Keuning in to one book in English. Now for Ashoka, I can't express my feeling for this "Great" legend in words. His every act and his whole life is an inspiration. Defiantly a must read(listen).

Excellent Book

While I am a history buff, I am truly surprised that this masterpiece was something missing from my eyes (Ears now) all this while. Though fiction, this is written and ready alike and glorify Ashoka, his beliefs and dwells into the finer details aptly. A must read.

Too lenghty and dragging.

In the period of 5-6 months could finish only half. Very slow moving story, lenghty and dragging in each part. Need to have too much patience to listen. Most of the time I sleep, when I hear this.
