About this listen
Few territories are as hotly contested as the western Pacific Ocean. Across the 1.5 million square mile expanse of the East and South China Sea, six countries lay overlapping claims that date back centuries. China, Vietnam, Korea and Indonesia assert their right to trade routes, deploying military garrisons to defend disputed territories while Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines resist their expansion. But no single government can face a superpower such as China alone, and as the country extends its reach, less powerful states look to the United States for diplomatic mediation, creating an American security umbrella that stretches across the Asia-Pacific, nicknamed the 'American Lake'. These conditions produce an unstable cocktail of competing interests and international tensions poised for conflict.

Brilliant insight and well researched for current times.
This book is written in mind with constant changes in politics,
But it helps understand the thoughts of various countries around the world.
And now more than ever we need to understand how most countries view China and China itself views itself. Maybe a shift in ideologies is needed. Humphrey Hawksley is a brilliant author and constantly stays in touch with multi faceted problems like the ones the world is facing in South China Sea.

Biased
The author’s tone is biased especially towards India and has showcased/mis -represented facts about India grossly. The author still feels that India is limited to snake charming but has conveniently overlooked the progress it has made over last few decades. Perhaps the British author is not able to fathom that the erstwhile colony of britishers which they left in shambles could grow that much in a small period compared to the centuries of mis-rule done by them.
