An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States.

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Critic Reviews

"A genuine page-turner, full of intimacies and reflections." (Evening Standard)

"A rich, entertaining and candid memoir. And overall Obama's a fun person to sit alongside as she tells you the story of her life...it is as beautifully written as any piece of fiction." (i)

"Offers new insights into her upbringing on the south side of Chicago and the highs and lows of life with Barack Obama...a refreshing level of honesty about what politics really did to her. I have read Barack Obama's two books so far, and this is like inserting a missing piece of reality into the narrative of his dizzying journey." (Guardian)

Exceptionally good. And I am understating it..

1. If you put effort, if your intent is good and kind, and you endure hardships and difficulties with optimism and faith, there is no limit to what you can become.
2. There is never an end to becoming i.e what you can become next.
That sums up the narrative of Becoming. But that is just the beginning.

Ever since I have read “A promised land” by Barack Obama, I have been wanting to read “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. I thought it would be the other neatly fitting piece of the 2 piece Jigsaw capturing Obama and the Obama years. I plan to read the other two books authored by Obama but for now, at this moment, when I was reading this book, I was in for a pleasant shock. For starters, Michelle Obama, steps out of the shadows of the illustrious Barack Obama. (and how!) She provides such a sincere account of herself and her life (before and after 2008). Michelle delves on perspectives, aspirations, fears, anecdotes, after-thoughts and learnings from her life. She does that with stunning honesty. She balances growing up, family, racial bias, parents, kids, education, a love life, motherhood, inequities in the state and society and the responsibilities as the First lady of the USA (FLOTUS) in due measure which is generous and seemingly faultless. She rants a few times, but that is what makes the reading even interesting – it makes her more human. But at all times, she holds on to hope, faith, optimism, a sense and longing for better things on the horizon.

In the course of 70 years, there are only a few FLOTUSes one remembers – Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. In “Becoming”, Michelle gives an honest account of coming to age and defining the soft power of the FLOTUS to further issues plaguing the nation and the world at large. She scales on wide ranging subjects from being a daughter to being a mother and a wife, from addressing childhood obesity to breaking racial-gender stereotypes to the personal bloopers to being shamed by the media on non-issues – she does more than a mature job of hanging it coherently for the reader.

A great autobiography makes you think long after the last page is flipped shut. It makes you question your stereotypes and clichés. It enriches you with the experience of the person who addressed you from the pages. Becoming does all that and more. In fact, if I were to say truthfully, “A promised land” pales against “Becoming”. I refer to this quotation – “A man with dreams needs a woman with vision”. In Barack Obama’s case, you see this materialize in the form of Michelle Obama.

Now then, having finished becoming – I am nursing thoughts of reading Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel. As I say, a great autobiography always paves way into the others.

The idea of what should be.

Great story. I enjoyed it like a travelogue, her journey from then to now. But I'd just listen for the narration.

This is exactly how we should read all books!

The privilege to hear the author narrate her story, her book is beyond compare! I walked through her story, her descriptions, voice modulation and punctuation as they were intended to be lived. I strongly recommend this audible.
