Editorial Reviews

To the teenage mind it might be funny to write a prisoner on death row pretending to be your mother. There is, however, nothing amusing to Charlie, 15, when the killer, who always wrote back and claimed to be innocent, is unexpectedly released and starts dating his mom and spinning an already problematic life in a new, horrible direction. Jerome Pride masterfully voices the rebellious attitude of Chas and his mates, as well as the violence and creepiness muddling the already bleak world for Chas, younger brother of Stephen, the main character of Ally Kennen’s internationally acclaimed debut novel, Beast.

Critic Reviews

"Written with a verve and confidence that never lets up, this excellent novel well deserves the large audience it should get." (The Independent)
"Fatherless, 15, and often in trouble, Chas, is living with his tough-as-nails grandmother and dealing with the death of his brother. On a lark, Chas sends a letter to a death row inmate as a joke. When the prisoner is unexpectedly released and comes looking for payback, Chas's involvement brings increasing danger to his family and friends. Though narrator Jerome Pride sounds a bit old for a teenager, his appropriate accent, expressiveness, and energy make this performance an involving listen. He infuses humor and a mischievous likability into Chas's character, rescuing him from being just another young thug. The listener can't help liking Chas as he perseveres when things become complicated and dangerous. Teenagers will enjoy this walk on the wild side." (AudioFile Magazine)
