The Taliban have disappeared from Kabul's streets, but the long shadows of their brutal regime remain....

In his short life, 11-year-old Fawad has known more grief than most: his father and brother have been killed; his sister has been abducted; and Fawad and his mother, Mariya, must rely on the charity of family to eke out a hand-to-mouth existence. But despite their struggles, Fawad's love of life never fades.

Then Mariya finds a position as housekeeper for a charismatic Western woman, Georgie, whom Fawad discovers is caught up in a dangerous love affair with the infamous Afghan warlord Haji Khan.

Born under a million shadows, but so bright

The most humorously written book on a dark and sensitive subject of Afghanistan. The character of the protagonist, the young boy Fawad is simply too brilliant! One couldn't help falling in love with this little one. In fact, all characters are so well created! I have laughed my heart out and laughed out loud too frequently listening to this lovely book. If this book doesn't cheer you up then no other book possibly could! I have listened to other books based on Afghanistan, which too are very good, but, because of the humour and wit, this one takes the cake! When I got extremely sad and started cursing the author for killing Georgie, the ending turned out to be such a pleasant, beautiful surprise! 😊

Wish this book had been much longer! I didn't want it to end so soon. Why fabulous things are so short in life!! 😔
