About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From butcher's daughter in communist Hungary to winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, this is the story of one woman's extraordinary determination and her breakthrough discovery that saved millions of lives.

Katalin Karikó began life as a butcher’s daughter in communist Hungary. Raised in a one-room home of clay and straw with no running water, she saw potential everywhere: in the promise of a seed, in the alchemy of soap, in the scarlet of a carcass.

Breaking Through is the extraordinary story of her courageous determination – first to become a scientist, and then to unlock an elusive molecule she believed could revolutionise medicine. Others disagreed, and for decades she endured demotions, discrimination and even threats of deportation. Yet Karikó persevered, ultimately making a world-shifting discovery: the mRNA vaccine technology that saved millions of lives and will transform healthcare forever.

'Riveting. A true story of a brilliant biochemist who never gave up or gave in' BONNIE GARMUS
'This remarkable memoir ... is a joy to read' FINANCIAL TIMES
'Karikó's story is an inspiration' BILL GATES

Excellent biography Wort a listen/read

This is an excellent and inspiring book about the struggle to succeed when passion does not always align with reality. This is a great book that teaches how sometimes a dream has to survive in the face of endless obstacles. The work is the reward, not the results for all of us stand on the shoulders of those that precede us.

The one more time

If there is any option, I would rather this book 10 stars. The book is full of wonders, personal account described in a very simple language. What a life so far. She struggled, she fought, but never ever given up to the adversity. Her life is all about science, specifically, mRNA research. People mocked her, she never got any grant, but she continued in her pursuit for the truth. Of course, she got some great friends during her academic and life journey. The incredible journey should be read and listened by all. She beautifully explained the science that anybody can understand. The challeges she faced was tough, but she showed how tough people do things in the adversity of situations. She didn't blame anyone, went to bench and set up the next experiment. She saved millions of lives by discovering mRNA vaccine against COVID 19. Her book is an inspiration, create ripples in the mind and I pondered how she showed that obstacles is the way to success.
