About this listen

[While the western front was shaken by large battles of attrition, Southern Italy and Austria were desperate for a victory that could be decisive. The battles of the Isonzo were in some ways very similar to those fought on the western front, in practice trench warfare. The fighting on the Italian front was exhausting and characterized by large losses. There was a disastrous defeat at Caporetto, entered into common parlance as a synonym of defeat, with 40,000 Italian soldiers killed or wounded, and 275,000 others finished as prisoners of the enemy.]
