About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People, written and read by Vanessa Van Edwards.

Do you wish you could decode people? Do you want a formula for charisma? Do you want to know exactly what to say to your boss, your date or your networking partner? You need to know how people work.

As a human behaviour investigator, Vanessa Van Edwards studies the hidden forces that drive our behaviour patterns in her lab - and she's cracked the code. In Captivate she shares a wealth of shortcuts, systems and behaviour hacks derived from her research, to help you take charge of interactions at work and at home. You'll learn how to execute a social game plan to navigate any social situation; how to speed-read faces for seven universal 'microexpressions' that can be used to predict people's emotions; and much more besides. When you understand the laws of human behaviour, you can get along with anyone. With Vanessa's help you will never interact in the same way again.

Includes a bonus PDF of quizzes, graphs and illustrations.

Boring - Yawnnn

"Captivate" is a book that promises much but delivers little beyond superficiality and clichés. While it purports to offer insights into capturing attention and mastering social dynamics, it falls short on multiple fronts, leaving readers with a sense of disillusionment.

The author's approach to the subject matter is disappointingly shallow. Instead of delving into the nuances of human interaction, "Captivate" relies heavily on generic advice and oversimplified strategies. Readers seeking genuine understanding of social dynamics will find themselves sorely lacking in substance.

Furthermore, the book suffers from a lack of originality. Many of the techniques and anecdotes presented feel recycled from other self-help books, lacking the fresh perspective or unique insights that might have distinguished it from the crowd. It's as if the author simply regurgitated common knowledge without adding anything meaningful to the conversation.

Even more concerning is the book's tendency to oversimplify complex social dynamics. Human interaction is a nuanced and multifaceted phenomenon, yet "Captivate" reduces it to a series of formulaic steps and manipulative tactics. Such an approach not only undermines the authenticity of interpersonal relationships but also fails to equip readers with the skills necessary for genuine connection and empathy.

In conclusion, "Captivate" is a missed opportunity. Its shallow insights, lack of originality, and tendency to oversimplify complex issues make it a forgettable addition to the self-help genre. Readers would be better served seeking out more substantive and authentic sources of guidance on social interaction and personal development.
