About this listen

Meta wants to silence her voice. You can hear her words.

'Devastating . . . funny . . . highly enjoyable . . . A Bridget Jones’s Diary-style tale of a young woman thrown into a series of improbable situations' The Times

'Jaw-dropping . . . A tell-all tome' Financial Times

Sarah Wynn-Williams, a young diplomat from New Zealand, pitched for her dream job. She saw Facebook’s potential and knew it could change the world for the better. But, when she got there and rose to its top ranks, things turned out a little different.

From wild schemes cooked up on private jets to risking prison abroad, Careless People exposes both the personal and political fallout when boundless power and a rotten culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative, Wynn-Williams rubs shoulders with Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg and world leaders, revealing what really goes on among the global elite – and the consequences this has for all of us.

Candid and entertaining, this is an intimate memoir set amid powerful forces. As all our lives are upended by technology and those who control it, Careless People will change how you see the world.

'Darkly funny and genuinely shocking: an ugly, detailed portrait of one of the most powerful
companies in the world' The New York Times

Eye opening

While it’s common knowledge that Facebook has manipulated several key Geo political events and they’ve been subjected to some level of scrutiny, it’s clearly not enough to stop their greed and apathy. The fact that Facebook tried to stop the author from promoting her book is precisely the reason why I bought it. Obviously they are scared. Not that I expect any consequences for Big tech what with all kissing the current administration’s a**. Hopefully this book will go a long way in readers realise that companies like Facebook need to be reigned in. Sarah’s account of events is gripping and held my interest right till the end.

Compelling and shocking

Sarah's forthright and engrossing narrative gave me insights into Facebook's workings, which have caused so much harm, thanks to the callousness of top management.

Eye-opening and gripping!

'Careless People – A Story of Where I Used to Work' by Sarah Wynn-Williams is a powerful memoir that exposes the toxic culture at the top levels of Facebook (now Meta). With searing honesty, Wynn-Williams, the former Director of Global Public Policy at Facebook, recounts the ruthless corporate machinery, the indifference toward global consequences, and the disregard for employees’ well-being that defined her time at the company. It’s a courageous and eye-opening account from a whistleblower who pulls back the curtain on a company more concerned with control than accountability. No surprise Meta tried to stall its release.

A must read

Taking everything at face value, and without giving anything away, this book is a bombshell. It is the epitome of personal and corporate greed—and, aptly, the carelessness of people in power. It showcases a reckless attitude toward the horrors faced by ordinary people, manipulated by the powerful who couldn’t care less about anything or anyone beyond profits or influence It leaves you feeling helpless, as we are so entwined with and dependent on platforms created by truly abhorrent individuals.

All about Power, Greed and more Greed

When I first started listening to the book, two things crossed my mind. First what a brave and tenacious person Sarah is and secondly why was she so desperate to get into Facebook of all places. Is she a deep asset for the 5 eyes? When there was no position for her in the company a position was created. Her background in Diplomacy did come in very handy. As the story progresses it dawned on me that the company FB is no good. Only thing guiding the company is profit and power derived from capacity to influence common simple folks. What it gives back to USA is taxes on the salaries of people who work in US and Zero taxes on company profit as they use 'double Irish' to move money from one shell company to another abroad. MZ as owner of company it appears is so delusional as to think of himself as not less than a President of any country.

As listers will notice FB is no good with privacy. One should post only those thing on FB which you want the world to know about. Nothing personal any one should be posting. It is dangerous to the security of any country as there are hardly any safeguards and your data is not your data once you post it on FB. FB derives all its power from the number of users on it.

Narration of the Book was good, the accents were shifting. Story line was well edited and tight. But there was hardly any closer to the story. US being such a litigious society why no lawyer came forward to take up her case for % share from the final compensation. Or there was an out of court settlement about which the book is silent.
