Hodgson's psychic detective gets a good showing
While WH Hodgson's more challenging works are his one off horror adventures like House on the Borderland and Boats of the Glen Carrig, he also wrote a pleasing series of short stories featuring Carnacki the Ghost Hunter, a sort of psychic Sherlock Holmes who exclusively investigates haunting phenomena. There's an inviting coziness to each story which begins with an after-dinner tale by Carnacki to his friends of his latest exploit. Taken all together, there can be a certain amount of monotony in the stories in terms of the nature of the haunt and the protocols that Carnacki follows to deal with it. But it makes for comfortable listening and the acting is first-rate,
These readings are partially dramatized and carry a nice spooky ambience. I would recommend them to fans of Carnacki and ghost stories in general.
