Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut Children of Blood and Bone.
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. When different clans ruled – Burners igniting flames, Tiders beckoning waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoning forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, anyone with powers was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Only a few people remain with the power to use magic, and they must remain hidden.
Zélie is one such person. Now she has a chance to bring back magic to her people and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must learn to harness her powers and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where strange creatures prowl, and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to come to terms with the strength of her magic – and her growing feelings for an enemy.
The movie of Children of Blood and Bone is in development at Fox 2000/Temple Hill Productions with the incredible Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey (Twilight, Maze Runner, The Fault In Our Stars) producing it.
Critic Reviews
"Turpin’s captivating narration, with incantations sung in Yoruba, intense battles, and lively, devastating dialogue, makes this an audiobook not to be missed." (AudioFile)

Beautiful narration
I loved the narration and how each character was portrayed so vividly. The story seemed to go in circles at times though and I will not be continuing the series.

A mind blowing fantacy
I loved the way the book is written from the perspective of 3 characters and my favourite is Amari who is soft hearted yet decisive. Zelli on the other hand is strong and courageous but she suffers through a lot.. Which is heart breaking for her and the way things happened around her making her life unfair, Magic redemption is the only thing which can do justice to her and I wish her to come back with the impeccable power. Inan is very complex character but yes i understood his effort to stop the fight and make things stable but yes sometimes you have to pick a side other wise you will always be alone.
The way book takes you to different scenes is amazing and I really loved the way this audio book has been recorded.. Bahni Turpin did a really great job and made us to feel for the characters and their emotions are very clear in her voice.
I am so excited for the next book and hope the same voice takes the audio.
I have not been much fan of fantacy but this book changed my perspective. 😍😍

A fantasy world set in backdrop of Africa
I really enjoyed reading/listening to this book. The copy I have is narrated by Bahni Turpin and she did a great job.
I loved the world created by Tomi. Because of her now I know what is kaftan , gele and different shades of skin colors. All the characters were well written with their own back stories and perspective of the situations.
In author's note I read why she wrote this book and can't agree more with her. As of today the very topic which wanted to bring to everyone's notice happened few weeks ago where Ahmaud Arbery was killed while he went out to Jog. This just shows that how embedded the racism is in our society and how much we should fight against it.
On lighter note, I am exited to read her next book in the series. Also I heard Disney is making a movie on this and can't wait to see all the characters come alive.
PS. Can't help the feeling the story seems similar to the Throne of glass and court of thorns and roses. May be because I just read too much fantasy :P
