Publisher's Summary

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab comes a sweeping, spooky, evocative adventure, perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Ever since Cass almost drowned (okay, she did drown, but she doesn't like to think about it), she can pull back the Veil that separates the living from the dead...and enter the world of spirits. Her best friend is even a ghost.

So things are already pretty strange. But they're about to get much stranger.

When Cass's parents start hosting a TV show about the world's most haunted places, the family heads off to Edinburgh, Scotland. Here, graveyards, castles, and secret passageways teem with restless phantoms. And when Cass meets a girl who shares her "gift", she realizes how much she still has to learn about the Veil - and herself.

And she'll have to learn fast. The city of ghosts is more dangerous than she ever imagined.

New York Times best-selling author Victoria Schwab delivers a thrillingly spooky and action-packed tale of hauntings, history, mystery, and the bond between friends (even if that friend is a ghost...).

Hauntingly beautiful

This story is about Cassidy, who can cross over to the land of the dead, owing to the fact that she almost drowned one day and was saved by a ghost, Jacob, who becomes her best friend after that. Her parents are writers who investigate and write about paranormal activity. They move to Edinburgh, Scotland to shoot the first episode of their new TV show and this is where the adventure begins. Cassidy meets Lara, who can also cross over to the land of the dead. Lara tells Cassidy that their job is to help ghosts move on but Cassidy is not sure about that. And then there is the Raven who is hell-bent on stealing Cassidy's life!

Victoria Schwab has always amazed me with her world building and characters and she doesn't disappoint this time either. I especially liked the character of Lara who is headstrong and sure about what she wants to do. The atmosphere created was also pitch perfect. On one hand there was the warmth of Cass and Jacob's friendship and on the other hand the Raven spooked the hell out of me. I actually listened to the audiobook and I used to listen to it only at night, and let me tell you there were instances where I regretted my decision of turning the lights out😂 Scotland has been depicted beautifully here and I could almost feel like I was exploring the castles along with the characters. One thing that amazed me was how natural it is for the people of Edinburgh, Scotland to live with the spirits and the paranormal happenings.

The narrator has done a great job and she is the narrator of the sequel too, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Apart from the spooky elements, this is also a story of friendship and human relationships. I would recommend this book to all the horror lovers.
