About this listen

A thrilling story about sisterhood, secrets, love and murder by Sally Hepworth, the New York Times bestselling author of The Soulmate and The Mother-in-Law

It’s not just secrets buried at Wild Meadows.

For as long as they can remember, Jessica, Norah and Alicia have been told how lucky they are. Rescued from their own family tragedies, they were raised by a loving foster mother on an idyllic farming estate and given an elusive second chance for a happy family life.

But the girls’ childhood wasn’t quite the fairy tale everyone thinks it was. And when a body is discovered under the home they grew up in, the three foster sisters find themselves thrust into the spotlight as key witnesses.

It’s time for them to return home as adults. The only question is are they innocent victims or the prime suspects for murder?

With darkly comic timing and insidiously twisting plots, Sally Hepworth’s novels are guaranteed to keep you listening...

Dark Humour

Reading Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth was an emotional rollercoaster that truly pulled at my heartstrings. The way it delves into the trauma foster kids experience is both heartbreaking and eye-opening. Hepworth does a remarkable job portraying the hardships these children go through in foster care, balancing the story with just the right amount of dark humor to give us some relief from the heavy emotions.

The novel follows two timelines, and both were gripping. I found myself equally invested in both, eager to uncover the mystery that seemed to unfold during the therapy sessions. For the first three-quarters of the book, I was completely hooked. The mystery had me guessing, and the layers of pain, deceit, and survival unfolded so well that I could barely put it down.

However, as I reached the latter parts of the story, I started feeling disappointed. The way the mystery was resolved felt rushed and lacking the impact I had expected. It was as if the tension, which had been building up so well, deflated suddenly, like a balloon that had lost all its air. While the reveal did surprise me, it wasn’t the shocking twist the book seemed to promise earlier on. Instead of a jaw-dropping moment, it was more like a quiet realization.

That said, the writing itself was excellent throughout. Hepworth’s style had me flipping pages effortlessly, and she managed to strike the right balance between sensitivity and rawness when addressing such a difficult subject. I just wish the ending had been a little tighter, a bit more carefully crafted to give the story that extra punch it needed to be truly unforgettable.

In the end, Darling Girls is still a good read, especially if you enjoy a mix of psychological drama and mystery, but I couldn’t help but feel it needed a bit more to live up to its full potential.
