About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
One of the world’s greatest scientists of human behaviour, the bestselling author of Behave, shows that free will does not exist - and sets out the disturbing yet liberating implications of accepting this fact.
What if free will is an illusion? As Robert Sapolsky shows in this masterful account of the science of human behaviour, everything we think and do is caused by the luck of our biology and the influence of our environment, and ultimately both are beyond our control. In a world without free will, we must completely rethink what we mean by choice, responsibility, morality and justice. Sapolsky’s extraordinary book does exactly this, guiding us toward a profoundly fairer, more humane way of living together.
‘A joy to read. It's impossible to recommend this book too highly. Reading it could change your life’ LAURENCE REES
‘Outstanding for its breadth of research, the liveliness of the writing and the depth of humanity it conveys’ Wall Street Journal
‘Moving, absorbing, compassionate' OLIVER BURKEMAN, Observer

An excellent piece of work.
One of the must-read books of 2023. Eloquently explaining the neuroscience of free will. A good sequel to his former book Behave.

Excellent Sequel to Saplosky's 'Behave'
This book will make you look at yourself and the world differently. A wonderful book to complement Sapolsky's earlier classic book Behave. I had no free will in writing this review...I am a Sapolsky fan. His video lectures and books are simply one of its kind. Determined is one excellent intellectual trip.

Brilliant, concise, insightful, often staggering
Do we have free will or are we merely complex stimulus response devices. Can we know? Does it matter? I believe that I have some control over the outcome of my life. I make choices and those choices have consequences. My choices are strongly influenced by my heredity, the conditions under which my brain developed, and the accumulated experiences of my life. Nonetheless, I believe that I exercise some measure of free will in my conscious decision making.

What a closing!
This is a heavy read (listen) as are Sapolsky''s other books. But completely worth the effort. And I loved the way he has closed this book.
