About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

2022's most original and darkly funny murder mystery from award-winning comedian Benjamin Stevenson.

I was dreading the Cunningham family reunion even before the first murder. Before the storm stranded us at the mountain resort.

The thing is, us Cunninghams don't really get along.

We've only got one thing in common: we've all killed someone.

My brother, my step-sister, my wife, my father, my mother, my sister-in-law, my uncle, my step-father, my aunt. Even me.

When they find the first body in the snow, it's clear that only a Cunningham could have committed the crime—and it's up to me to prove it.

There are plenty of killers in my family. But only one murderer....

Critic Reviews

I absolutely loved it. Utterly original, hugely entertaining, and a must-read for every fan of the mystery genre. What an exceptionally fresh, smart, funny book - I've never read anything like this before. (Jane Harper)
As fresh and zingy as a salted lime. It's Knives Out meets Richard Osman. Or Dexter by way of Agatha Christie. Or Schitt's Creek with a body count. It's also the most luxuriantly enjoyable novel I've read in years. And years. I began toting my copy around town so that strangers would ask me about it - who could resist that title? I only wish there were more members of the Cunningham clan, so that this raucous, matchlessly entertaining mystery could go on longer. Benjamin Stevenson, I've got a lot to learn from you (A.J. Finn)
The best thing I've read in ages. I absolutely loved it. Whip-smart, twisted, funny, and constructed with the pinpoint precision of a bloodthirsty watchmaker. (Stuart MacBride)

A book I am going to be reccomending to as many people I can

Loved the writing; loved the narration. If the clever title and synopsis made be buy the book, the humour made me want it to never end.

interesting writing style and wickedly funny at places. the story builds up well, but fails you at the end.

listen for the narration and humour

the story seems too out there at times, but does tie up nearly neatly at the end. what was most surprising was the MC being portrayed as a complete dufus all through the book right until the time of the great reveal.

gripping story, delightful narration

the story has you guessing right up to the end which is a pretty cool thing... and the narrator's voice is in your head even when you're not listeningto the book... fun times!

Wonderful

I love when stories refer to themselves, talking about their own structure. I love murder mysteries. To find these two together in this wonderful little package is great. Highly recommended.

(one note, the end of chapter 36 is missing. I "found" a copy of the ebook online to read those few pages. I should take off a star or two for that, but eh)

A twisted tale

Enjoyable, funny, full of twists and turns. The narration by Barton Welch is just perfect. Although not a very long novel (in line with Agatha Christie) but all the characters have some level of depth which is a plus.

One of the best listens...ever! ♥️

This is one of those books where a few chapters in, you regret that you'll soon finish it (and will be left with a void), and yet, you cannot stop compulsively listening to it.

What do I say? Everything is simply brilliant.

The way the author talks about the rules of writing a mystery novel, the way he keeps his promise, and (at the same time) presents us with a grippingly suspenseful (yet laugh-out-loud funny at places) read, it's just no easy feat to pull off something like this.

I loved every moment of it. The performance was as good as the writing. Thank you, Benjamin Stevenson and the team at Audible. I absolutely loved it. 💖

PS: Looking forward to exploring more Aussie crime fiction. Do share recommendations if you can.

3.8 stars

The story was well paced and well written. The ending, especially the epilogue felt a little convenient though.
