About this listen

'I have a truly marvellous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain.' It was with these words, written in the 1630s, that Pierre de Fermat intrigued and infuriated the mathematics community.

For over 350 years, proving Fermat's Last Theorem was the most notorious unsolved mathematical problem, a puzzle whose basics most children could grasp but whose solution eluded the greatest minds in the world.

In 1993, after years of secret toil, Englishman Andrew Wiles announced to an astounded audience that he had cracked Fermat's Last Theorem. He had no idea of the nightmare that lay ahead.

In Fermat's Last Theorem Simon Singh has crafted a remarkable tale of intellectual endeavour spanning three centuries, and a moving testament to the obsession, sacrifice and extraordinary determination of Andrew Wiles: one man against all the odds.

beautifully describes how an idea can influence generations of thinking. how one can eat, drink, sleep on an idea. on the way it also describes how people can die devoting their lifetime to it.

finally it leaves to the future generation to ponder upon if there is a simpler solution to the last theorem..

is there a simpler solution for fermats theorem ?

This book is something which I would never have imagined - a fascinating history of maths. It covers so much of what we learnt growing up showing all of it in a whole new light. The narrator does this full justice carrying us along a journey. Perfect narration.

A beautifully told story about an intriguing theorem. A real journey through a whole host of mathematical revelations and the lives of those luminaries. As someone who has had a lifelong love of maths, I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone with similar inclinations. Even if you’re not a big fan of numbers and such, this history is so gripping that I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too
