About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Gardens Of The Moon: (Malazan Book Of The Fallen 1) by Steven Erikson, read by Ralph Lister.

Bled dry by interminable warfare, infighting and bloody confrontations with Lord Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, the vast, sprawling Malazan empire simmers with discontent.
Even its imperial legions yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his Bridgeburners and for Tattersail, sole surviving sorceress of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out - and Empress Lasseen's ambition knows no bounds.
However, it seems the empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister forces gather as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

Conceived and written on an epic scale, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement - a novel in which grand design, a dark and complex mythology, wild and wayward magic and a host of enduring characters combine with thrilling, powerful storytelling to resounding effect. Acclaimed by writers, critics and readers alike, here is the opening chapter in what has been hailed a landmark of epic fantasy: the awesome 'The Malazan Book of the Fallen'.

Critic Reviews

Erikson is an extrodinary writer...treat yourself to Gardens of the Moon (STEPHEN R. DONALDSON)
Complex, challenging...Erikson's strengths are his grown-up characters and his ability to create a world every bit as intricate and messy as our own (J.V. JONES)
There's nothing safe about fantasy like this: intriguing, complex, thought provoking, exceedingly well-written, and, for the intelligent reader, exhilaratingly satisfying (PAULA GURAN)

Truly EPIC!!

Assassins, mages, battles, gods. Do I need to say more? The writing isn't the usual (I wouldn't say it's bad, it's just different from other fantasy). It can be hard to keep up sometimes, but the characters and the plot make up for it. Wouldn't recommend it to a new fantasy reader though.

Oh by the way, did I mention Dragons and A FLYING MOON

An excellent start but flawed

To start off, I loved this book. Erikson writes in a style very much his own and these characters are excellently introduced and they grow even within this one book.

My only gripe with this book is that the world building takes a little getting used to. It took me near the end of the book to truly understand a lot of the world building done way back. Obviously this can only grow from here and from what I've heard of this series, it DOES grow.

so on the whole, not the best book I've ever read, but still incredible

A magnificent story, made even more engaging by the gripping narration

Gardens of the Moon is an interesting and unique story, filled with amazing character work and unique world building. I enjoyed it immensely.

The narration is beautiful, complete with unique voices for each character, making one feel like they can actually hear the conversations and the undercurrents within them.

A must read if you are a Fantasy fan

First of all let me clear this first THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Now that is cleared, lets get to this review. I started reading Fantasy books a year ago and because of an impulse i started Malazan. We are thrown into the world at the beginning of this book and the author expects us to learn everything ourselves. Personally, i dont find this a difficult thing to do. If you trust an Author and the countless of reviews for this book, you will wait for thing to make sense.

The one thing i dont like in this book is the ending, I felt like the issues are rectified very suddenly. There was a huge problem coming and we have a very powerful person waiting for it and then within 2 or 3 pages, its all done and the book ends. Other than that, this is a perfect book.

Not bad, not great

The book was good in moments when its pace slowed down. For the most part, it was like listening to a really long summary. Quite difficult to follow. But you'd still finish it because people say books get better later on in the series.

Special props to the narrator for an excellent performace in a quite demanding book.
