रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर का यह उपन्यास बीसवीं सदी के प्रारम्भिक वर्षों के बंगाल पर केन्द्रित है और उस समय के समाज, राजनीति और धर्म की वास्तविक तस्वीर प्रस्तुत करता है। जहाँ एक तरफ राष्ट्रीयता की भावना प्रबल हो रही थी वहीं प्राचीन आध्यात्मिक मूल्यों का पुनरुत्थान हो रहा था। एक तरफ प्रगतिवादी राष्ट्रवादी थे जिनका सपना था कि देश की प्रगति में सभी का समावेश हो वहीं कट्टरपंथी सत्ता के पुराने ढाँचे को कायम रखना चाहते थे। इन दोनों पक्षों को उपन्यास के नायक गोरा और उसके दोस्त के माध्यम से बड़ी कुशलता से प्रस्तुत किया गया है। इन दोनों से जुड़े अलग-अलग पात्रों के माध्यम से और भी कई कहानियाँ, मुख्य कहानी के साथ, बुनी गई हैं और उनके ज़रिये उस समय के अनेक प्रासंगिक विषयों पर रोशनी डालने का प्रयास है जिसमें शामिल है समाज और संस्कृति से औरतों का बहिष्कार, विभिन्न जातियों का आपसी टकराव इन सब मुद्दों के भंवर से गुज़रते उपन्यास के पात्र स्वयं को ढूंढने का प्रयास करते हैं।.
