About this listen

From award-winning writer J D Kirk comes a blockbuster thriller for fans of Lisa Jewell and Sarah A Denzil, performed by Louise Brealey, featuring David Tennant.

Just because he sounds real, doesn’t mean he is…

When Sarah’s husband, Nick, is killed in a car accident, her world shatters. Facing a future without him seems impossible.

But maybe she doesn't have to.

When Sarah discovers EternaTech, the AI program Nick and his business partner have been working on in secret, she is given the chance to speak to Nick from beyond the grave.

It sounds like him. It feels like him…

As Sarah becomes consumed by her connection to this digital Nick, she begins uncovering secrets about his final days. But as she digs deeper, the lines between what's real and what isn't blur, and Sarah must confront a chilling, terrible truth.

Some things may be best left buried.

Engaging soft SF thriller!!

A story pretty germane to our times when the technology news often sounds like science fiction. The concept of a departed loved one being reanimated by an AI company thus requires minimal suspension of disbelief. However, at the risk of a mild spoiler, the book flips some of the established tropes in the genre on their head which got a smile from me. The plot is replete with red herrings so it keeps you guessing and involved throughout.

But the book, especially the first half, is also a portrait of the intense grief that follows loss and anyone who has been through it can relate to every word. The plot kicks off in the second half and while the transition is smooth and the pacing alright for the most part, the services of a good editor might have been appreciated at places.

Brealey's performance brings the plot to life and she is great at making one feel deeply for the protagonist and understand her tumultuous state of being, not to mention the other characters with their accents and diverse personalities. Tennant is excellent as usual and steals the show in the short time he's on.

They have all the right ingredients but cook it all wrong

Strong basic premise, but choppy writing, somewhat cliched 2D characters, and a severe shortage of David Tennant bits. Listen if you have nothing else handy right now

Black Mirror

This story sounds very similar to Be Right Back from Black Mirror series by Charlie Brooker on Netflix, except a few changes in the plot. But it is engaging enough. For performance, I would not have given even 3 stars, if not for Tennant. No offense to Brealey, but her narration is inconsistent throughout the book. It is depressing in one line and suddenly, she puts in too much excitement - high pitched, tensed tone (as though it is the end of the world) in unwanted scenes/ places.

Good concept, bad writing

To many moments of breath getting caught in throat, lungs squeezing, room spinning. It just felt repetitive and did nothing for the story progression. It belaboured the grieving process. It wasnt fun to listen to. I disliked how actually pathetic the character was written. The protagonist isnt gven any saving graces. There no one good thing about her. She’s unidimensional a snivelling blubbering grieving fool. Off putting
