About this listen

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds—clearly someone, or something, is up to no good. To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift and encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new 21st-century economy.

A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting, and full of current fears, Horrorstör delivers a high-concept premise in a unique style.

If mundane is ever phenomenal, this is it.

I listened to the audiobook of Horrorstör and it completely changed my view of how audiobooks can transform a book. Not all books, but some deserve to be read as an audiobook and this was one of them.
Set in a fictional store ORSK (think IKEA stores but better), we are introduced to the story with the announcements that they would probably do at the store or have as details in their catalogue. Hearing them as actual voices takes you to the setting very easily because I certainly haven't been to any store that remotely resembles IKEA or any other famous Swedish furniture store. I had no idea about the environment in them.

So we follow Amy, who is a floor partner of an ORSK store at a remote location. One day Basil, the deputy store manager asks her and her colleague Ruth, to stay the night. The reason being vandalism that occurred inexplicably in the store. They decide to hold a vigil but things go south pretty soon pretty fast. The furnitures are traps and dummy doors that should open to a wall now holds mysteries behind them. The rest of the book is about how the employees battle with the horrors of the night.

All the characters are pretty mundane in their own way. But their true natures shine through when they are pitted against forces beyond their control. The major transformation was Amy's character, who finally realises her worth. The ending is left open, so I hope there be a second book that follows Amy and Basil's adventures at Planet Baby, the store that took over the Cuyahoga site. Honestly this book was something that I hadn't really experienced before. I would have probably DNFd the book had I read the physical book or at least skipped through the catalogue pages. But with the audiobook, we slowly realise that as the scenario transforms in the store, so does their product ads. If mundane is ever phenomenal, it is this book. I notice that this books has the comedy tag, but I don't think it fits. If anything, this book was caricatural, a satirical work to expose the idiosyncrasies of a big organisation. Well if you think that's humorous, then yeah, it's comedy, I guess.
