Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
David and Cheryl Baskin are living the dream—married, a beautiful new house in the suburbs, a three-year-old son named Matthew—when tragedy strikes in the worst way possible.
David awakes to find himself covered in blood... but not his own, his son's. While David is sure he did not murder his son, the overwhelming evidence against him puts him behind bars indefinitely.
Then, five years following his imprisonment, his wife's sister brings David a photograph of Matthew looking very much alive, accompanied by an unknown figure.
Can David escape prison, find Matthew and bring him home?
The consequences are dire, but prospect of being reunited with his son is way too tempting to resist.
Soon David is on the run. But it soon transpires that he knows way too much, and that there are people out there who will do anything to silence him. For ever...

Good but not great
This was my first Harlan Coben book. I don't have anything of his previous works to compare it too so my review and rating is based on what I've read in the genre in the past from other authors. Not a fair comparison I guess.
The story is based on a premise/ event which seems a bit far fetched even in the circumstances of the timelines, past and present capabilities of law enforcement etc. However once we reconcile to that, the narrative and the progress, the characters etc. do hold your attention. Some of the story parts seem superficial and unnecessary and just add to the length without contributing to the story - which I feel takes away from the storyline.
The twist once it unfolds in the story isn't really there since that is the only solution possible - of course one want guess the contrived nature of how it is arrived at but you know that's how it HAS to unfold. The duplicitousness of it all itself seems contrived.
So read it for the thrill. It's a good read no doubt. But not something you'll want to revisit again.

Well performed
This is typical Harlan Coben. But the performance makes it more thrilling and engaging. A good fast read.
