About this listen

Short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize 2018

A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer - the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorised California for over a decade - from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case.

'You'll be silent forever, and I'll be gone in the dark.'

For more than 10 years, a mysterious and violent predator committed 50 sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated 10 sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website True Crime Diary, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called the Golden State Killer. Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark - the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death - offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman's obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth.

Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and an afterword by her husband, Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by Michelle's lead researcher and a close colleague. Utterly original and compelling, it is destined to become a true crime classic - and may at last unmask the Golden State Killer.

Not worth the hype

Michelle spent a considerate amount of her adult life trying to find the GSK. Her raw, blind passion is evident in the book. She researched tens of thousands of documents and corresponded with various police detectives. She worked on this project even up till three days before her passing.

After she passed, her husband, research partners and publishers stitched together all her work and produced this book. The catch is, the killer wasn't caught when she passed, or even when this book was decided to be published. Which makes this book basically a very long list of leads and suspicions that Michelle chased. Now that we know who GSK is, I find it difficult to understand why this book is so highly rated. Why are people liking the experience of reading speculative notes of a self-appointed investigator who never even caught the killer?

The stories are hard to follow since there are mentions of around 150 names (victims, their family members and police officers) and maybe another hundred names of cities, streets and neighborhoods. In a few places it's not clear who the voice is, since it wasn't written by the author, which makes for an uncomfortable read. It's clear this book was written by the author's loved ones since her family and childhood stories are lovingly, but unnecessarily mentioned in a true crime book.

The blog entries from her website are also included in the book and those were the only chapters with great writing. I wish she had lived long enough to find the man she obsessively searched for and write this book herself.
