From the author of the multimillion-copy bestseller
Normal People, an exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family.
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties - successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father's death, he's medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women - his enduring first love Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.
Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.
For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude - a period of desire, despair and possibility - a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.

Philosophical and Psychological Ride
Rooney has great philosophical and psychological knowledge. The way she writes reaches very close to the heart. Her characters' plots feel real and easy to be in their shoes.
I love Normal People, and I loved Intermezzo even more. Her writing helps me experience complex situations and learn from them as if they are mine.

Very vivid Characterisation
Nothing special though initially I found it a bit difficult to understand some of the dialogue because of the Irish accent.

Siblings in mourning
I reelated to the author's rendering of brothers who are mourning their father's passing while dealing with the complexities of their relationships.
On this first listening, and might actually read it again, I couldn't help feeling that I like this book better than the others that I've read so far.

An intimate story about brotherhood, love and grief
An intimate story about two brothers working through grief in different ways after the passing of their father, while also in complicated and unconventional relationships. A foray into the depiction of the different shades of masculinity. Fair warning, this book has a lot of s*x descriptions but it has been written sensitively. Overall, somewhat repetitive in parts but a beautifully written work. Narration is excellent.
